Phuket on a rainy day: what to do when the beach is off

When it rains in Phuket, which month is the wettest, and how to spend the day and the evening indoors — based on Thai Meteorological Department data, not guesswork.

Rain in Phuket is not a disaster, it is part of the year. It helps to know about it in advance and to have a plan for a day under a roof.

When it rains

Thailand has three seasons, and the rainy one runs roughly from mid-May to mid-October. In Phuket, according to the Thai Meteorological Department, it is mostly dry from December to March, and the wettest month is September: the airport station averages about 400 mm that month. Over a year it adds up to about 2,500 mm.

In practice this rarely means rain all day. More often a downpour comes, passes, and an hour later the sun is out again. But there are days when the beach is not worth it.

The sea in the rainy season

Waves on the west coast get higher in the rainy season. For Mai Khao, the island’s longest beach, the warning is explicit: from May to November swimming there is dangerous because of currents. On other beaches, watch the lifeguard flags and stay out of the water when the red one is up.

What to do during the day

  • Aquarium. Aquaria Phuket is on the lower floor of the Central Phuket Floresta mall — fully indoors.
  • Malls. You can spend half a day in the same Central Phuket: cafés, shops, and no running to the car in the rain.
  • Massage and spa. The right time for things you would not spend a sunny day on.
  • A temple. Wat Chalong in the south of the island is a good trip when the rain eases.

We do not list opening hours or prices of these places: they change, so check the places’ own sites.

What to do in the evening

A rainy evening is the best excuse to stay in. Order food, turn on the air conditioning and run a tournament.

We bring a PlayStation 5 to where you are staying — a villa, hotel or condo. Games are already installed:

  • FC 25 — football for two on one sofa;
  • Mortal Kombat 1 — short fights, easy to take turns;
  • GTA V, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part I, Uncharted — when you want a story for a few evenings.

Want to play together? Ask for a second controller when you book — we will check whether one is free for your dates.

What it costs
